These are a few of my favorite things!

I have been writing this blog for over two years now because of how important I believe it is for parents, teachers, therapists and others to be educated on the importance of handwriting, how to improve their students’ handwriting and practical ideas for what to do. I have enjoyed providing this free information, though it can be quite time consuming.  So I have decided that in addition to my therapy services, handwriting training camps for kids and training services for adults, I am going to offer products on my website!

I am very excited about this addition and plan to continue to offer valuable and practical information as well. My goal is to offer an analysis and insight of toys and products that I think can be useful for hand development, muscle strength, visual perception, eye-hand coordination and many other aspects that serve as foundational skill builders that ultimately lead to better handwriting in children.

So to start off I would like to introduce to you, {drum roll} Orbeez! I just love these! Orbeez are little gel balls that can be used in so many ways! You grow them in water and preserve them in an airtight container. You can also let them dry and they return back to tiny little balls for easy storage. I have my clients wash their hands first since I have a large bin of them and use them over and over. I also regularly rinse the tiny balls off and pat them dry to clean and preserve them.  Orbeez are non-toxic but should be used with close supervision as they could be a choking hazard for little ones or tried as a snack for your oral seekers and kids who put everything in their mouths! Orbeez are great for increasing sensory experiences, decreasing tactile defensiveness, improving fine motor muscle development and pincer grasp, bilateral hand coordination, grading pressure, eye-hand coordination, visual motor skills, sorting, counting, pre-scissor skills, practice for using a spoon, among other areas of development. I am sure you will be able to find many more uses for them as well.

Here are some pictures:

Please bear with us as we launch our new product sales. We will do our best to get them right out to you and if you have any questions or problems feel free to call. I’d love to see comments about how you used Orbeez!

I am also placing Grab-A-Bubble in the store. This product is great for kids who have delayed reactions, poor motor skills and for improved visual motor and eye-hand coordination. Grab-A-Bubble are bubbles that are thick, almost plastic like, that float for a very long time before they pop. You can actually hold them in your hand! I will warn you that they can be a little messy. I just use a swivel sweeper to get them up quickly after I’m done. However, they are tons of fun!

Next for lowercase letters after teaching capital partners, teach the Magic C letters. These letters c, a,d,g,o,q all have the same motor pattern and letter formation. Use the c formation to make each letter. “Make a Magic C, then turn it into an a” and say this for each letter. Handwriting without Tears has a great song called the Magic C Rap, that kids absolutely love!
